Labor’s victory needs to mark a reset for climate policy in Australia, said Fiona Armstrong, Strategic Projects Director for the Climate and Health Alliance (CAHA).
“We congratulate the Australian Labor Party on their victory. CAHA and our members look forward to working with Labor to breathe life into their commitment to develop a national climate, health and wellbeing strategy”.
Australia’s large and diverse health sector knows well that climate change poses a grave risk to our collective health, and the capacity of our health system to respond, said Ms Armstrong.
“We also know that decisive climate action can deliver major health benefits to all Australians” she added.
“Now the real work begins. Australia has a real opportunity to be a climate champion.
“Our new government has the mandate to act now to protect health, tackle inequality and reduce emissions for the good of Australia.”
CAHA welcomes the Labor Party’s commitment to develop and implement Australia’s first national strategy on climate, health and wellbeing, and their commitment to implement the Uluru Statement from the Heart in full.
“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s voices need to be front and centre as we tackle urgent climate and health challenges,” said Ms Armstrong.
