National Strategy for Climate, Health and Well-being

Are you concerned about the health effects of climate change on your community?

Over 98% of healthcare stakeholders we surveyed want a national strategy on climate, health and well-being for Australia!

The Climate and Health Alliance is coordinating a health sector-led campaign calling on the government to develop a National Strategy on Climate, Health and Well-being for Australia. We are calling on all those concerned about the impacts of climate change on health to join us to call for action to respond.

Why do we need a National Strategy on Climate, Health and Well-being?

Climate change is already having significant adverse effects on human health. These include physical and psychological trauma associated with extreme weather events, warmer temperatures contributing to worsening air pollution, spread of infectious diseases, and risks to food and water security, to name a few.

Consultation with healthcare stakeholders shows a majority consider current climate policies to be ineffective. There was almost universal agreement from respondents to our survey that a National Strategy on Climate, Health and Well-being is needed.

We have now developed a Framework for a National Strategy on Climate, Health and Well-being for Australia in collaboration with over thirty health and medical organisations following a year-long national consultation.

The Framework for a National Strategy on Climate, Health and Well-being for Australia was launched at Parliament House in Canberra in 2017. The Australian Labor Party has committed to implementing a Plan based on this Framework if elected to government as have the Australian Greens - but, to date, there has been no such commitment from the Coalition.
