Health and medical groups call for Prime Minister to scale up climate action to avoid escalating health threats
HESTA Super Fund, the Australian Medical Association, and 59 other health groups have signed an open letter to Prime Minister Scott Morrison, calling on the federal government to scale up emissions reduction strategies to prevent premature deaths and declining health outcomes associated with climate change.

New report shows urgent need for National Strategy on Climate Change and Health
A new report stating that “the health of the Australian public is uniquely at risk” from the effects of climate change demonstrates the urgent need for the federal government to adopt a National Strategy on Climate Change, Health and Well-being, says the Climate and Health Alliance, Australia’s peak body on climate change and health.

Health groups call for net-zero target in Australia’s health system following UK NHS net-zero announcement
Following the announcement overnight that England’s National Health Service (NHS), the world’s largest health system, has committed to a net-zero direct emissions target by 2040, Australian health groups are calling for a net-zero target for healthcare in Australia.
The NHS announcement includes an ambition to reduce emissions by 80% by 2028 to 2032 on a 1990 baseline, and a 2045 net-zero target for their indirect emissions and for those they can influence in their supply chain (with an ambition to reduce those emissions by 80%, by 2036).

Over 30 health groups associated with the Climate and Health Alliance have issued a Joint Statement calling on the federal Health Minister to recognise climate change in the National Preventive Health Strategy, currently in development.
The Joint Statement, signed by the Public Health Association of Australia, Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation, and Australian Association of Social Workers states, "A National Preventive Health Strategy that is fit for purpose in the 21st century must address climate change -- or it will fail in its objectives."
